Far Cry demo review

Yesterday I had a short look at the Far Cry demo and I'm very impressed.

I have set all to maximum at a resolution of 1280x1024 and the graphic was superb. The water, the detailed textures, the animations...

... this game will rock for sure, it seem to become a must have 8) 8) 8) .

Only little prob I had was that every time I tried to make a screenshots the game crashed *weird* :? .

Has anyone else this problem :?: . I would like to post some screenshots of it, but both with the inbuild function and Snagit it doesn't work *sigh*.

I couldn't download it (stupid 56k :x ) Maybe one of me friends can give it to me! I saw something about it on TV. Damn! This game will rock the whole 3D-Ego-Shooter branche! Amazing game! Someone knows when it's gonna be released?

With or without screenshot tool (SnagIt) it doesn't work :( .

Release is planned for 24 and 25. of March 2004 (US and Europe), hopefully it will not been postponed.

Ok I've tested Far Cry a little bit more now, so here is a short review :

Plus :

You have mutiple options to setup the game, so a lot of tweaking to make the game for most of the maschine will be possible.
First impression of graphics is awesome : The water is the best I've seen ever. The textures are detailed. Plants are animated.
The demo seems to be an old engine build, so hopefully the bugs are fixed in the final.
You can drive vehicles, so far I had a lot of fun in riding a gun-boat :D .
Level design is very detailed.
The sounds and music are high quality, giving the game the right ambiance.
The enemy AI seems to be ok. If you approach them directly, they are acting immediately.

Minus :

Loading time for the first level isn't as long like in Unreal 2, but you have to wait a while until the games starts.
Anitaliasing isn't working so far. There where some notes in the offical forum about it, but nothing helped to get AA working.
There are some minor texture distortions (black fragment on the rocks).
The game is lagging a bit, but like told in the offical forum they are working on it.
Not all options especially the graphic ones are implementated in the demo so far, some don't work correctly.

That's it, so my conclusion : The game has surely much potential, but this demo is still very buggy. So it's worth a download only if you have a fast connection.

Testing system : Intel P4 3.0 GHz HT, Radeon 9700 Pro, 1024 MB 400MHz RAM, Catalyst 4.1, DirectX 9.0b

No better not, it's still lagging on my P4 3 GHz :? .

This game has the potential to become a awesome FPS. Hopefully they will fix all the bugs and will optimize the performance a little bit. So far playing the demo is much fun 8) .

For those who have problems playing in Direct3D mode, open the systemcfg.lua file and search for...

r_Driver = "Direct3D9"

and change it to

r_Driver = "OpenGL"

...save the file and play the demo in OpenGL, which runs with my Radeon 9700 pro much better without any artifacts or other graphical disturbance. Only thing you have to live with is a slight flickering sometimes.

well i finally got this game downloaded and work and it has potential but i dont know if they r trying to do this or it has just come aross this way, the game feels very arcadey

the weapons dont have power that other games like bf 1942, and the recall on the guns feel very funny compared to sniper rifle (or it could be perfect because i have never fired a gun so iam just basing it on other game)

overall the game is good IF they were goin for the arcadey effect but if they were trying to make the game relistic i think they need to do some work on (again iam basing this on other game seein that i have never fired a gun)

also it strugles on my comp and any game that strugles on my comp ofcause iam not goin to get the best out of the game

btw the borg how good r the texture with direct x 9 casue i must say there is nothing special with teh game on my video card :? :?

With my Radeon 9700 pro and all settings to high the overall graphic quality is damn good, the textures are very good, detailed and sharp. As well there's used a lot of bump mapping all over.

And yep it isn't a simulation like BF 1942 it's more a simply shooter like SOF 2, but it is surely much fun playing it.
