View Full Version : Future PC Component Purchases?
so any of you guys will purchase a pc component anytime soon or in the future
as for me I am done with desktop pc components, I am saving for a laptop purchase around december
me waiting for nvidia to announce their mobile core based on the 6800 series
I myself have a pretty good laptop already w/decent graphics and sound able to run anything up to and including Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. I use it mainly for school though and thus, don't want to seriously screw w/it......
(Some of the games I run on my laptop include Vice City, ST: Bridge Commander, Hitman 2, Max Payne 1 & 2, NFS: Underground)
I'm going to be doing the exact opposite of you Atzlan and start saving for a really good desktop machine........by the time I get the money together, I figure there should be some good machines (w/fast processors, graphics etc.) out there and all the games I want to get (Doom 3, The Sims 2, San Andreas, NFS: Underground 2) will be out in stores.
:)

I just bought a new mobo because the one I'm using now only supports AGP 4x, which is a waist for my Geforce FX5700U. It's an MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R.

at least you got a petty good board :)

Ehh, link invasion. Thx I'll read through it, but not today - good night :) .
Im planning to buy a completely new machine.
In this case, it will be a waste of money.
So Im going with a new CPU, memory, MoBo.
So I will stay with my current Video/Sound card, optical drives and HDDS.
Im waiting until the DDRII memories arrives

As for what I'd LIKE to buy, it'd be the obvious:
-MSI KVT8 Master2 (dual AMD 64+ chip) motherboard, 4 GB of RAM, my obsolete 120 GB Maxtor 7200-RPM 8-MB cache HDD, an NVidia-based 6800 board (as soon as Az recommends me one! :o), a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS card, Linksys 10/100 Fast Ethernet card, and of course, my custom-machined, custom-painted Red Metal case (WIP, pics later), and maybe a water-cooling system (if I can afford it.)

@ LSD you seem to be buying a workstation
thats an arm and a leg, specially with the ram,
yikes
anyway, how much are you planning to spend on the video card?
and since you live in the states, i will only reccomend you this company
http://www.bfgtech.com
it has top notch costumer support and their warranty is a lifetime one
plus is based in the U.S.
so just give me your price range damn it

I need a full upgrade really. Motherboard, RAM, PSU, Video and CPU. All externals are still ok, case may need upgrading too tho as it's a real budget one that doesn't even accomodate my current motherboard very well.
List of parts most likely to get is:
Mobo - Asus A8V-DELUXE
CPU - AMD ATHLON 64 3200+
PSU - ANTEC TRUE480 TRUE POWER 480W (LOW NOISE)
VIDEO - Asus A9600XT-TVD-P-128 ATI Radeon 9600XT
thats a nice choice of parts kamper, nice system for sure :)

Thanks Az, it's not exactly a beast, but definitely better than current system, and should be future proofed for at least a year or two (except maybe video card).
no you are quite wrong on the video card, is 9600 xt
which is as fast as a 9700 pro
my brother has a 9700 pro and doom 3 run smoothly @ a resolution of 1280X1024
so it will last a time
also you are getting a gig of ram right?

Yeah that's true, the new cards already shadow the XT's, but they're still great cards and it's good to hear how well your brother's handles D3. I'll definitely have to get some new RAM, probably look at that later on, but a gigabyte would be a good idea as I have 256 now and so many programs obviously need more when I run em as there's a lot of swapping going on.
ok, I just said that I was going to buy a laptop
but here is in more detail what I plan to buy
it will be a desktop replacement plus it will be portable :D :D
Sound
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=29-102-167&depa=0
to replace the crappy onboard sound that laptops have
headphones
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-3jD2JqQlcMh/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=4&g=49700&I=143HD555&o=p&a=0&cc=01&avf=N&search=headphones
storage
http://www.plextor.com/english/products/712uf.htm
and the laptop is still up in the air, but for sure it will have a mobile nvidia core based out of the 6800 series
and the processor will be an amd one
most likely an athlon 64 3400+
memory will be 1 gig, and hd will be a 7200 rpm 80 gig
this purchased will not happen until january 2005 I believe
dont rush to get it

@Az: My budget will be $2k-5k; as low as possible, as I will be (and am) working for it. I figure, hey, new gen GFX cards, new gen mobo's and CPU's, new gen soundcards are getting cheaper...might as well have something worth playing on for a few years (through college), eh?
since you say as low as possible
than get the 6800 Gt from bfg of course
http://www.bfgtech.com/6800GTOC.html
also I notice that you are going for an athlon 64
make sure its the 939 pin one
since that one will last for a time
btw. @az.. the new intel socket has ups and downs, its not all bs if u read
different articles.. ;)
and yeah 6800 gt :D
articles:
http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20040619/socket_775-04.html
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=17617
and i guess u read this one lol
http://www.overclockers.com/articles1049/
lol, I dont read overclockers.com since that site has a stupid editor that is more pessimistic than anything out there
I dont read tomshardware.com since that site is bias and full of it
I only read hardocp.com
I am not bashing the new socket, I the initial processors based on the socket are bs
you should wait until intel releases the new processors with 1066 FSB
those are the ones one will need to look foward
ah sorry, guess i missunderstood u back then.
i agree bout the current 775 cpu's and right now
478 is the way to go, still..
:)
