It's finally time for me to upgrade my video card, I've held off as long as possible, but now it's at the stage where my GeForce2 doesn't even meet bare minimum requirements games coming out now. The two cards that both seem pretty decent, and within my means, are the Ati Radeon 9600XT, and the Nvidia FX5700. I was just wondering what you guys think would be the better choice for my AMD system, and why.

id defenetly wait a few weeks till the GF6800 and/or the x800 is out.
im not saying u should buy those, but im sure all prices will fall down
the line as soon as those two babes see the light ;)

first, if you wait, expect along wait

second, when they come out, they will not drop the price of the video cards in question since the new cards are for enthusiasms
high end machines

they range in price from 299 USd for the 6800 to 499 for the 6800 ultra or x800 xt-PE

while the cards you want are 9600Xt or 5700 which are below 200 USd

the 9800 pro and XT will be phased out by the new video cards

so if you can afford a 9800 pro, go for it

but if you cant, go with the 9600XT
is a petty good card, I installed it in a friends pc, with a 1.2ghz tbird , 512 mb of ram and i was quite amazed that it could run farcry as fast as my 9800 pro with aa and Fa on

so in my opinion the 9600 Xt is an excellent choice
you cant go wrong with it

as soon as a new product that "is" better hits the shelf (sp) the older
products go down in price, else none bothers buying them if they can
get a way better one for almost the same price. if that wouldnt be the
case then a new gfx card would get more expensive every year
thats common sense. dont know where
u live it might be different

the only question u have to ask urself is if waiting for the next batch to
get released is something u wanna do. as u can already order systems
in the US that have got a gf6800 innit, i asume it cant be so far off till
they reach australia. i just always hate it, when i buy something and
a few weeks later i could have gotten it for half the price jsut cos there
a new model or whatever out, but thats me.

I have the GeforceFX 5700u (MSI) and it's a great card. I haven't tested the 9600xt, so I can't tell you which is best. But which is best also depends on which games you like to play. Nvidia overpowers Ati at some games while Ati overpowers Nvidia at other games. I've always stayed with Nvidia, but that's a personal opinion. I also stay with intel, for the same reasons.

In a previous topic there are some stats about the 6800 which include thse of the 5700 and the 9600xt. This way can see which card scores best at the games you like.

btw I bought my 5700 for 179€. that's about 200$, I guess.

The 9600 XT is a good card, a friend of mine has owned it a while ago and is very pleased. As well I'm using a 9700 pro since one and a half year and this card is simply great. All games are running fine with quality settings set to high and as well ATI support is quite good, with a new driver set every month.

Thanks for the replies guys, I've been watching the prices for a while, they've gone down a bit since the news about the new cards, but I imagine they could come down a bit more once the new cards have been out a month or so. I think it'll be worth waiting. I was going to go with the 9600XT up until a friend suggested the 5700, but I think I might go with the 9600XT as planned. You guys seem happy with your Ati's, so I'm sure I will be too. :)

If u go down the nvidia route the best choice (bang 4 buck) is the FX5900XT...I've got 1 & its grt imo...full nv35 chip just underclocked with cheaper ram compared 2 5900 ultras & 5950's...beat 5700ultras on everyting...& @ £140 3month ago ..Im very happy with.....its the new GF4200(great value/almost top end)

If you mean euros, then that's 244 AUD, but ehre that card is about 350 AUD. I think I might stick with the 9600XT, as it's pretty much within my budget, an if you keep thinking "it's only 50 dollars more", you'll go well out of your budget. Thanks for the tip tho Busta, I've had a couple of Nvidia cards, so might give Ati a go now.

Both are surely good cards, but for me ATI was and is a little bit more reliable, so good choice, go for it :D .

I hadn't even really considered this card, it's a bit more than the other two, but not by an insane amount. This actually looks like a decent card, maybe should look at this vs the 9600XT :P. Thanks Busta :)
